Super Bowl LIX: The Big Game is Big Money

January 30, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles are set for Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9. Over the years, the Super Bowl has gone from a mere championship game to a cultural event, earning both national and international attention.

Not only is it probably the most popular sporting event of the year, but it’s also one of television’s biggest broadcasts. Advertisers are spending up to $8 million for thirty-second commercials. That’s up from a $7 million average in last year’s game. Super Bowl commercials have a reputation for being star-studded, groundbreaking, humorous, or just plain unusual. For that reason, people won’t be taking a break and getting a snack but paying close attention—just what advertisers want!1,2

Speaking of snacks, the Super Bowl is also a time to get family and friends together to watch the game. That means it’s time to get out the chips and dips, not to mention those little smokey sausages! This is big business for the nation’s retailers, as Americans spent an average of $86 on Super Bowl Sunday, mostly for food and beverages last year. Maybe pick up some antacid, too.3

Grocery stores aren’t the only ones set up for a big payday. While getting to the Super Bowl is a great accomplishment for a team, there will naturally be a winner and a loser. The winning team’s players will take home a bonus. Last year, the Chiefs took home $164,000 each. And don’t feel bad for the other team—the San Francisco 49ers may have come up short, but they each took home an $89,000 bonus. That’s some consolation prize!4

I hope you and your friends and family enjoy this year's game! It should be a great time.
